This still life artwork speaks of a story of not what was left but what stayed with Kashmiri Pandits post exodus. During displacement, homes were destroyed, walls lost, soil abandoned and landscapes changed. But the rituals were not abandoned. They survived in round plates and pitchers; in carefully placed walnuts and fruits; in rice; in flowers and seeds; in the quiet glow of diya and fragrance of incense; in the yantra of Dejhor and Athhor (sacred jewellery worn by married Kashmiri women); in the new year, festivals, birthdays, events aligned with the lunar calendar; in the songs, chants and prayers; and in the sounds of bells & the sacred resonance of conch shell. All these were protected by the hands of Kashmiri women, who continued to arrange, prepare and remember all of these- even after exodus. These objects are not ordinary still life elements. They are a testament of our existence and continuity of our culture. They are the circles that refuse to break.
