This painting evokes the image of not just a woman entering marriage, but as a sacred bearer of lineage, ritual and continuity. She is softly layered with resilience, caring songs of her foremother’s in her pheran’s folds. Her jewellery glimmers, but beneath it flows the poetic wisdom of mystic Lalleshwari (Lal Ded) She steps forward not only into a new home, but into the role of custodian of culture. The still life around her speaks of the richness of the soil she comes from and what her land is famous for. It also speaks of cyclic life- harvest, preservation, prayer and transformation. The branch of Chinar tree embodies change and endurance. Even when the tree sheds its leaves, the tree stands gracefully tall, much like our women.. The window opens to the world, to light, to knowledge and possibilities- that she has been taught to explore right from her childhood, even after getting married.
